What We Do
Just Part of Her Job
Law Enforcement Specialists (LES) scheduled Officer Dominguez to work as an off-duty police officer at a construction site first thing Monday morning. When she arrived for her assignment with Hayden Building Corporation, she realized she had forgotten her traffic vest so she borrowed one from the crew until someone from her agency brought her one. Sometime later, one of Hayden Building's crew members was operating a jackhammer in the middle of the intersection when he collapsed. Officer Dominguez rushed to his aid and discovered that he was unresponsive and appeared to be suffering from a heart attack. She started performing CPR and continued to do so until the fire dept and paramedics arrived. She was able to get his heart started again and when the paramedics arrived they stabilized him and took him to the hospital. Officer Dominguez went back to working her off duty assignment. Officer Dominguez considered what she had done to be just part of her job. It wasn't until Hayden Building contacted LES to get the officer's name and agency that LES learned of Officer Dominguez's heroic actions. When Officer Dominguez received a call from her agency, she thought it was going to be about forgetting her traffic vest, but instead she was being recognized for her heroic measures which saved someone's life. She was also featured in the West Valley View community newspaper.
This is just one example of the importance of having a POST* certified officer assigned at traffic construction sites. Because of their continuing education/training in emergency preparedness they are a valuable resource to the crew and the community in their off-duty roles.
Note: The Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Board was created to address the need for uniform peace officer selection, recruitment, retention and training standards, and to provide curriculum and standards for all certified law enforcement training facilities.
